Marcel De Lange, a struggling sculptor, faces harsh criticism from New York art critics, including F. Holmes Harmon, who destroys his chances of selling his work. Feeling hopeless, De Lange almost drowns himself, but instead finds the body of a notorious serial killer, the Creeper. De Lange befriends the killer, who helps him take revenge on the critics who belittled him. When a successful artist is mistakenly accused of the murders, his girlfriend, an art critic, begins to investigate De Lange's studio, where she discovers a suspicious bust.
