Aspiring actress Lora Meredith takes in Annie Johnson, a homeless Black woman, and her daughter Sarah Jane, who struggles with her racial identity and tries to pass as white, causing heartache for her mother. Meanwhile, Lora's own daughter is neglected in her pursuit of stardom.
