Mitch Wayne, a geologist, meets executive secretary Lucy Moore at a conference arranged by his friend Kyle Hadley, a playboy and son of a tycoon. Mitch and Kyle both fall for Lucy, and Kyle tries to impress her with his wealth. They get married and Kyle's drinking problem subsides, but he later discovers he may be sterile and starts drinking again. His sister Marylee, who has a crush on Mitch, poisons Kyle, telling him that Lucy is having an affair with Mitch. When Lucy becomes pregnant, Kyle's mistrust leads to a tragic outcome.
