Miss Marie Lloyd is a beloved English entertainer in the early 20th century, adored by her public. Despite her popularity, her marriages to fellow performers Alec Hurley and Percy Courtenay both end in divorce. Marie's down-to-earth attitude and act make her a huge hit, but some colleagues find her vulgarity unacceptable. She faces a tribunal over her songs, which she argues are not obscene, and is acquitted. Despite her success, Marie is considered too rude for the Royal Command Performance and finances her own successful show. Her final relationship ends with her abuse and financial exploitation by a younger jockey. Marie collapses on stage and dies at the age of 52, ironically while singing about the ruins of the past.
