In a small town on the eve of World War II, two working-class friends, Henry and Nicky, must navigate their final days of freedom before being sent off to fight. As Henry starts courting Caddie Winger, who he thinks is from a wealthy family, their relationships are put to the test by Nicky's reckless antics, forcing them to confront the true meaning of friendship and loyalty.
