In 1950, a commercial fisherman named Carl Heine Jr. is found dead on San Pedro Island in the Pacific Northwest, with Kazuo Miyamoto being charged with his murder. The two men were once friends, but their relationship was strained due to the war and anti-Japanese sentiment on the island. Kazuo's wife, Hatsue, is also entangled in the case, as she is the love interest of Ishmael Chambers, the owner of the local newspaper, who has been following the proceedings.
