A teenage rock hopper penguin named Cody Maverick embarks on a journey from his hometown of Shiverpool, Antarctica to the "Big Z Memorial Surf Off" on Pen Gu Island. Determined to win the prestigious competition in honor of his idol, the deceased surfing legend "Big Z", Cody faces challenging waves and stiff competition from the current champ, Tank Evans. Along the way, he learns valuable lessons about life and surfing from a recluse aging former surfer, Geek, and even teaches Geek a thing or two.
