In 1850s California, an undercover government agent, Ransome Callicut, disguises himself as a schoolteacher to uncover an insurrectionist plot to secede the southern part of the state and establish a slave state. When he finds a hidden weapons stash, he reveals his true identity and takes charge of the local army post, teaming up with Monk Walker and Olaf Swenson to thwart the plot and keep California in the Union.
