In 19th century New Zealand, Ada, a mute woman, and her daughter Flora, relocate to the North Island with her new husband Stewart. Despite the challenges, Ada's life takes a turn for the worse when Stewart sells her beloved piano to their neighbor, George. In a surprising twist, Ada learns she can regain her piano by teaching George piano lessons, but only under certain conditions.
