October 1944, war-torn Italy. A French-Canadian nurse, Hana, tends to a dying patient, a badly burned and disfigured man with amnesia. Their solitude is disrupted by the arrival of Canadian David Caravaggio, who believes the patient is a German collaborator. As the patient's past unfolds, it's revealed he's running from memories of an affair and an unfulfilled promise. Meanwhile, Hana begins a relationship with Kip Singh, a Sikh mine sweeper, whose unit has camped nearby.
