Stan, a troubled individual, sets his home ablaze and joins a traveling carnival as a way to escape his problems. He's shocked to discover that one of the performers, a "geek", is a man who's been manipulated into a life of madness and depravity by the carnival's leader, Clem. Clem lures men with troubled pasts into a false sense of security, using their dependence on drugs and alcohol to control them. Stan becomes entangled in the carnival's dark world, working alongside a clairvoyant act and developing feelings for a fellow performer, Molly.
