Gene Autry decides to start a stage line to carry the mail, as the need for the Pony Express no longer exists with the advent of the telegraph. He is fired by his boss for being disloyal and rival townsmen scheme to discredit the Pony Express riders and get a government mail contract for themselves. Gene and his pal eventually establish their own stage line and overcome the renegades.

A rugged cowboy must adapt to a changing world as the Pony Express faces extinction, and he finds himself battling to preserve his treasured mail route amidst the dawn of modern innovations.
