Four orphaned siblings, Henry, Jessie, Violet, and Benny, mysteriously appear in a small town one summer night, with no one knowing their identities or origins. To avoid living with a grandfather they've never met, they take up residence in an old red boxcar they find in the woods. Henry, the eldest, ventures into town to earn money and buy necessities, while the others make the boxcar their home, scavenging for supplies in a junkyard. As time passes, the resourceful children learn the value of independence and the joy of family, but when Violet falls ill, they must risk discovery to take her to a doctor, threatening their secret life in the forest.
