In 1935-36, Professor Melvin Tolson, inspired by the Harlem Renaissance and his work as a union organizer, leads the Wiley College debate team to a nearly-undefeated season. The team, consisting of four students including a female student and a young James Farmer, faces numerous challenges as they prepare to debate Harvard University's national champions.
