Leo, a 28-year-old writer, struggles to connect with others due to his perception of their superficiality, leaving him friendless and without love. After a falling out with his mother, he stumbles upon a group of poets, artists, and philosophers in San Francisco, and his life takes a dramatic turn. He falls deeply in love with Mardou, a beautiful blonde girl, and joins her bohemian circle, but their relationship begins to stifle his writing. Frustrated, Leo has an affair with Roxanne, causing Mardou to disappear for four days. When she returns, pregnant and determined to make their relationship work, Leo and Mardou leave their bohemian lifestyle behind, seeking a more conventional life together.
