Terry Polesky, a US Marine veteran, struggles to cope with his honorable discharge after a crippling wound leaves him unable to provide for his family. He abandons his wife Bethany and their daughter Alice, eventually becoming homeless and living in a camper on a deserted property with his loyal dog Duke. After ten years, Duke falls ill and Terry is forced to leave him at an animal clinic, believing he will be put down.
