Lee Simon, a 40-year-old novelist, leaves his wife of 16 years, Robin, a high school English teacher, after a disappointing high school reunion. He takes a job as a travel writer and starts writing screenplays, hoping to make a change and finish his third novel. Lee starts an affair with Bonnie, a publishing house story editor, who encourages him to complete his novel. Meanwhile, Robin is dealing with the divorce and meets Tony Gardella, a television producer, who hires her as a production assistant.
