During the Vietnam War, Lieutenant Don Jardian, a US Navy surgeon, works at a mobile hospital unit. Despite his efforts to save lives, his emotions have been numbed by the war's horrors. When he meets Lieutenant Deborah Solomon, a surgical nurse at a naval hospital in Da Nang, he starts to feel again. As they fall for each other, Don tries to return to Da Nang to be with Deborah, but their relationship is complicated by her undisclosed past trauma and the war's dangers.
