Mavis Gary, a 37-year-old ghostwriter, is struggling to find happiness after a failed marriage and cancelled book series. She becomes fixated on her high school sweetheart, Buddy Slade, after hearing he's had a child with his wife, Beth. Mavis travels back to her hometown, Mercury, Minnesota, under false pretenses to win Buddy back, but finds herself reconnecting with Matt Freehauf, a former classmate who was brutally beaten for being perceived as gay. Matt becomes Mavis' drinking buddy and tries to snap her out of her delusional state, encouraging her to reclaim her life as a functioning adult.
