Moonbase Alpha, a scientific research colony on the Moon, is home to over 300 people from Earth. The base is responsible for space expeditions and monitoring atomic waste stored on the Moon's far side. However, the waste's magnetic radiation causes a catastrophic explosion, breaking the Moon free from Earth's orbit and sending it hurtling into unknown space. The survivors must adapt to their new environment, encountering a mysterious planet whose inhabitants create an illusion of an attack on Moonbase.

A mining disaster on the moon's surface triggers a chain reaction, destroying Moonbase Alpha and forcing its 311 inhabitants to escape on the SS Endeavour, a rescue ship racing through space in search of safety.
