In the small town of Lawtonville, Illinois, a high school student's beloved German Shepherd, Rusty, goes missing without identification, leading to a series of misadventures. Rusty ends up with a poor itinerant family, the Neeleys, who are struggling to find work in the area. The student, Danny, assumes the Neeleys stole Rusty, and tensions rise when the Neeleys' infant son, Jeff, claims Rusty as his own, renaming him Gladly.
