In the small town of Lawtonville, Illinois, seven friends, including Danny and his German Shepherd Rusty, have been close companions of aging Counsellor Frank Gibson for three years. The Counsellor plans to leave his house, land, and pottery works business to the boys, rather than his nephew Fred, whom he dislikes. However, when the Counsellor passes away, his new will is disputed by Fred, leading to an adversarial relationship between the two sides. The boys, with the support of the town, and Fred, with his dislike of Rusty, engage in a battle to get what they want.
