A former Civil War soldier, John Carter, seeks a peaceful life but is recruited by the Army, which he rejects. He escapes and is pursued, eventually encountering Native Americans in a violent confrontation. Carter flees to a cave, where he stumbles upon a mysterious medallion that grants him extraordinary abilities, such as superhuman jumping. He soon encounters alien beings and a woman who reveals his presence on Mars, where he becomes embroiled in a growing conflict.
