In 1983, a postal clerk in New York is haunted by his past as a Buffalo Soldier in Italy during World War II. After shooting a stranger, a valuable marble head is found in his apartment, sparking a flashback to his time in Tuscany. The story follows four Black soldiers as they navigate the Serchio River, avoiding German and friendly fire, and rescue a shell-shocked boy. Their journey takes them to the village of Colognora, where they encounter a beautiful woman, partisans, and a traitor. The events of their time in the village, including a recent massacre, connect to the postal worker's anguish forty years later.
