Josey Aimes, a single mother, returns to her hometown in northern Minnesota and finds work at a mine operated by Pearson Taconite and Steel. However, her decision is met with resistance from her father, Hank, who believes she's taking a job away from a man. Hank's disapproval stems from Josey's past, including her teenage pregnancy and her refusal to reveal the identity of Sammy's biological father. Among her coworkers is Bobby Sharp, who may be Sammy's father. The female mine workers face constant harassment, emotional, physical, and sexual, from their male counterparts. Despite her efforts, Josey finds it difficult to make progress in the face of a united male workforce and fearful female coworkers. With the help of her friend Glory and a former New York lawyer, Bill White, Josey decides to sue the company for sexual harassment, but their efforts are met with resistance and only a small grain of truth may be enough to bring about justice.
