Benjamin Whitrow, a softly-spoken English actor, embarked on a theatrical career in 1959, his talents honed at the prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA). For seven consecutive years, from the 1960s, he worked under the visionary direction of Laurence Olivier at the National Theatre, refining his craft in a collaborative environment.
Beyond his impressive stage presence, Whitrow also had a successful career in front of the camera, often portraying avuncular characters. His most notable screen performances include a BAFTA-nominated turn as Mr. Bennet in the BBC's highly acclaimed adaptation of Pride and Prejudice (1995),and a final appearance in the Gary Oldman-directed film Darkest Hour (2017).
Outside of his professional endeavors, Whitrow was an individual with diverse interests. He had a passion for wild orchids, golf, bridge, and book collecting. Moreover, he shared his life with actress Celia Imrie, with whom he had a son, Angus Imrie.
