Derek Kwan is a multifaceted filmmaker and actor who is dedicated to crafting distinctive narrative flavors for the screen. One of his most notable achievements is the writing and direction of the short film, 100 Days (2023),which was selected for the prestigious Telefilm Not Short on Talent Cannes 2023 Program.
This talented individual has also made a significant impact in the industry by winning Outstanding Short Director for 100 Days (2023) at the Reelworld Film Festival 2023. With his experience spanning both narrative and documentary storytelling, Derek was one of eight mid-level producers from across Canada chosen to participate in the Bell Media / BIPOC TV & Film Unscripted Producers Lab 2023, focusing on showrunning.
Derek's impressive portfolio includes being the 1st AD on the music video "Different Than Before", which won the SXSW 2023 Music Video Jury Award. He also worked as the 1st AD on the feature film Mongrels (2024),which had its world premiere at the VIFF 2024.
Derek Kwan has been recognized as one of 20 emerging filmmakers in Canada as part of Reelworld's E20 Program in 2021 and also as part of Netflix-BANFF Diversity of Voices 2022. As a Producer, he has worked on Maundy (2022) and Idols Never Die (2019),both of which were selected for the Telefilm Not Short on Talent Cannes 2022 and 2019 programs.
As an actor, Derek Kwan has appeared in various TV shows and films, including The Last Airbender (Netflix),Yellowjackets (Showtime),recurring on Nancy Drew (CW),and co-starring on Space Force (Netflix).
