Eugene O'Neill was born on October 16, 1888, at the Barrett Hotel in New York City. He was the son of James O'Neill, a popular actor of the late 19th century, and Mary Ellen "Ella" Quinlan. Ella was a fragile person who had been emotionally hurt by the loss of a child and her husband's infidelity. Eugene's early life was marked by tragedy, including the death of his younger brother Edmund at the age of two and his own struggles with tuberculosis.
Despite his difficult childhood, Eugene went on to attend Princeton University for a brief period before being kicked out for being drunk and disorderly. He then spent several years leading a freebooting existence, fortune-hunting for gold in South America and working as an able-bodied seaman. During this time, he also struggled with alcoholism and made an attempt at suicide.
Eugene eventually returned to New York City and began to study playwriting at Harvard University in 1915.
