Ferran Adria Acosta was born and raised outside of Barcelona, Spain, where his initial passion was soccer. However, his trajectory took a dramatic turn in 1977 when he enrolled in the Polytechnic Institute of Merced to study Administration in Business Studies. Unfortunately, his lack of motivation led him to abandon his studies in 1980. Seeking alternative means of financing his vacation, he embarked on a culinary journey by taking up a job as a hotel dishwasher. Following his military service, Ferran began his professional culinary career as a line cook at elBulli, and by 1984, he had risen to the position of head chef, a role he held until 2011 when the restaurant closed its doors.
