Gackt, born Gakuto Oshiro, is a Japanese musician, singer, songwriter, and actor from Okinawa, Japan. His father, a music teacher, and mother, a teacher, instilled a love for music in him from a young age. As the second of three children, Gackt has an older sister and younger brother.
Gackt's musical education began at the age of three, where he learned classical music theory and piano. He was later exposed to rock music during his teenage years, which led him to practice electric guitar and drums intensely. In the early 1990s, he worked as a sound technician and studio drummer before launching his music career as a singer.
Gackt rose to fame as the vocalist, lyricist, and composer of the visual kei rock band Malice Mizer. He later parted ways with the band and debuted as a solo artist with the EP Mizérable in 1999. Since then, he has released nine studio albums, eight compilation albums, and forty-four singles.
Gackt is renowned for his conceptual and sometimes abstract themes in his music, which he refers to as "Visualive". He has also explored various film and television acting roles, including his first cinematic production, Moon Child, and his portrayal of Kenshin Uesugi in NHK's The Trusted Confidant.
Gackt's notable performances include his role as Yoshi in the film Bunraku, where he costarred alongside Josh Hartnett, Woody Harrelson, Ron Perlman, and Demi Moore. He has also reprised his role as Takashi Shiki and Yumeoji in the cinematic release, Akumu Chan the Movie.
In addition to his music and acting career, Gackt has lent his voice to various animated films and video games, including Dragon Age: Dawn of the Seeker and the Final Fantasy VII series.
