His father, Stuart, was born in Auckland, New Zealand, to English and Scottish parents, while his mother, Margaret, is English. The family relocated to Australia for two years in 1970, when Guy was just three years old, after his father was offered the position of Chief Pilot for the Australian Government.
Tragedy struck when Guy's father was killed in an aircraft test flight five years later, leaving his mother, a schoolteacher, to care for him and his older sister, Tracy.
