James "Buster" Douglas is a renowned American former professional boxer who enjoyed a remarkable career spanning nearly two decades, from 1981 to 1999. He is, without a doubt, most famously known for his astonishing upset victory over the then-undefeated Mike Tyson on February 11, 1990, in Tokyo, ultimately claiming the undisputed heavyweight title.
At the time of the fight, Tyson was widely regarded as the best boxer in the world and one of the most feared heavyweight champions in history, having dominated the division for the previous three years. The odds for the fight were set by The Mirage, the only casino to take on the challenge, with Douglas being a 42-to-1 underdog, making his victory all the more remarkable.
As commentator Jim Lampley so aptly put it, Douglas's triumph was "The biggest upset in the history of heavyweight championship fights." Douglas went on to reign as the world heavyweight champion for eight months and two weeks before losing to Evander Holyfield via third-round knockout on October 25, 1990, in his only title defense.
It is worth noting that Douglas is one of the select few non-students to have been honored by Ohio State University with the unique opportunity to dot the "i" during the performance of the Script Ohio by The Ohio State University Marching Band.
