John Murphy is a multifaceted artist, encompassing a wide range of creative pursuits. As a Canadian-Irish actor, he has made a name for himself in both television and theatre, with a repertoire that includes series regulars, guest star roles, and even music videos.
In television, John has played memorable characters on shows such as Sabrina, Away, Supergirl, Legends of Tomorrow, Arrow, Loudermilk, and The Good Doctor. Two of his standout projects were co-starring with Bradley Whitford on the limited series Valley of the Boom, and guest starring with Uzo Aduba and Matthew Broderick on the limited series Painkiller.
Beyond his television work, John has ventured into the world of web series, co-writing, co-producing, and directing the mockumentary Forgotten Masters. This critically acclaimed project has been nominated for numerous awards, including two Leo Awards for Best Web Series, and has won the Best Actor award at the Minnesota Web Fest.
John's expertise extends to the realm of short films, having directed, co-written, and co-produced two shorts, The Legend of Wilson Spalding and The Box, which won the Audience Choice Award at the Reelfast 48 hour Film Fest. He has also directed and produced the music video for the song Still Fighting by China Repair.
In the theatre, John has had a prolific career, acting in over a hundred plays, directing twenty-eight, and writing three. He has worked extensively with Bard on the Beach, Vancouver's celebrated Shakespeare festival, where he has played iconic roles such as Benedick, Petruchio, and Jaques, and adapted/directed Measure for Measure and Much Ado About Nothing. His directing and composing work has been nominated for several Jessie Awards, and he won the award for Best New Play for True Story. His one-man play, The Heretic, which he starred in as well, toured across Canada and played at the Edinburgh Fringe, earning praise from critics for being a "tour de Force".
John has also made a name for himself in the world of live comedy, performing in hundreds of sketch, stand-up, and improv shows. He co-founded the legendary Vancouver sketch comedy group, Gut-Wrench.
When he's not busy making movies or theatre, John can be found writing and playing music with his art rock band, China Repair.
