Biography

Paul Lazarus is a multifaceted creative professional, boasting an impressive portfolio as a director, producer, and writer across television, film, and theater projects. His recent work includes the feature-length documentary SlingShot, which explores the innovative endeavors of Segway inventor Dean Kamen to address the global safe water crisis.

Lazarus has also helmed several notable feature films, including the comedy-drama Seven Girlfriends, which premiered on HBO and Comedy Central, and the animated musical Joseph, voiced by Ben Affleck. His extensive television credits include directing prime-time series such as Pretty Little Liars, The Middle, Better Off Ted, Samantha Who?, Ugly Betty, 90210, and Big Time Rush.

In addition to his work in television and film, Lazarus has made significant contributions to the world of theater. He has directed numerous productions at the Pasadena Playhouse, including John Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men, Neil Simon's Biloxi Blues, and Kristin Chenoweth's solo concert debut. Lazarus has also produced and directed the world premieres of several new plays and musicals, including Mark St. Germain's Camping With Henry and Tom and The 24th Day.

As Artistic Director of the Pasadena Playhouse in the early 1990s, Lazarus oversaw the production of over eighty plays and musicals at prominent theaters such as The Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center, Playwrights Horizons, and The Goodspeed Opera House. His notable credits include receiving a Drama Desk Nomination for directing the hit Off-Broadway musical Personals, and staging the premieres of several new works.

Throughout his career, Lazarus has collaborated with esteemed artists, including Stephen Sondheim, Barbara Streisand, Warren Beatty, Angela Lansbury, Carol Burnett, Eric McCormack, Jason Alexander, and Bernadette Peters. He has also produced and directed various concerts and radio series, including the acclaimed 75th birthday tribute to Stephen Sondheim at the Hollywood Bowl.

Lazarus has served on the Executive Board of the Stage Directors and Choreographers Society for over a decade and has been a graduate of Dartmouth College. He apprenticed with the Royal Shakespeare Company in England, further solidifying his credentials as a respected and accomplished creative professional.
