Biography

Peter Ellis is a renowned English actor with a diverse and extensive career in theatre and television. He has had the privilege of working with esteemed institutions such as the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) and the Old Vic Co, where he has played a wide range of iconic roles.

Some of his most notable performances include playing Benvolio in Zeffirelli's Romeo and Juliet, Hotspur in Henry IV, and Rosencrantz in a world tour of Hamlet starring Derek Jacobi. He has also had the distinction of performing on the site of the new Globe Theatre, playing the role of Guildenstern in Hamlet.

In addition to his work in theatre, Peter has also had a successful career in television. He is perhaps best known for his long-running role as Chief Superintendent Charles Brownlow in the popular ITV drama The Bill. He has also appeared as a semi-regular in other notable series such as Emmerdale Farm and Coronation Street.

Throughout his career, Peter has appeared in a wide range of television shows, including Edward and Mrs Simpson, The XYY Man, Nolan, The Les Dawson Show, Victoria Wood's play Talent for Granada, and Acorn Antiques for BBC TV. He has also had the opportunity to work with acclaimed directors such as Ken Loach, who directed the David Mercer television play In Two Minds in 1967.

In addition to his work in television, Peter has also appeared in several films, including the horror classic An American Werewolf in London in 1981. He has also had the opportunity to work in the theatre, appearing in the play Trafford Tanzi at the Mermaid Theatre in London in 1983, starring alongside Toyah Willcox.

Peter Ellis has been a regular cast member of The Bill since its inception in 1984, playing the role of Chief Superintendent Charles Brownlow until his departure from the series in 2000. His last episode was written by his son Hugh Ellis, making it a truly special and memorable experience for both Peter and his family.
