Peter Mattei is a renowned playwright, novelist, screenwriter, director, and television series creator. He has received widespread critical acclaim for his work, including an award-winning one-hour series, Outsiders, which was among the top-rated cable series in 2016/17.
Mattei has also written original pilots for various networks, including HBO, Fox, A&E, CBS, and ABC, and has created and directed an original documentary series for AMC. In 2023, he wrote, directed, and produced the acclaimed Audible Original drama, Sonarius: the Mysteries of M.
Born into a working-class family in Missouri, Mattei graduated from Brown and the Yale School of Drama. He was a founding member of the Obie-winning Cucaracha Theatre in New York, where he wrote and directed several critically-lauded plays that were then produced in theaters around the country.
Mattei has received numerous awards and commissions, including residencies at Yaddo, MacDowell, and the Royal Court Theatre in London. His microbudget feature, Love in the Time of Money, was developed at the Sundance Directors Lab and premiered at Sundance in 2002.
As a novelist, Mattei's debut, The Deep Whatsis, was a "red hot debut" and was published in six languages and nine countries in 2014. His photographs and art videos have been showcased at various galleries and festivals, including Fotofest in Houston and the Carrie Haddad Gallery in Hudson, New York.
Mattei has also worked as a commercial director for clients such as Sony Music, Puma, and Playstation, and has won Clio Awards for his short documentaries on rappers Ca$hOut and Dyme-A-Duzin. He is currently developing television series for Fox/20th via Lee Daniels Entertainment, Topic Studios, and is set to produce international TV series in Rome and Berlin.
Mattei's experimental feature film, The End of Nowhere, is currently in post-production.
