Poonam Basu is a multifaceted individual, exceling as an actor, writer, and filmmaker, with a strong connection to her New York roots and current residence in Los Angeles.
Her early life was marked by a deep passion for dance, which she began learning at the tender age of two. She soon transitioned to reciting nursery rhymes on stage at Indian cultural events, showcasing her talents from a young age. Her formal acting training commenced in the sixth grade, setting the stage for her future endeavors.
Poonam's high school years were highlighted by her involvement with a theater troupe, which took her on a performance tour to Regensberg, Germany. This experience further nurtured her passion for the performing arts.
During her summer break before her senior year at Harvard, Poonam interned with the LOEB experimental theater in Cambridge, gaining valuable experience in the industry. She went on to complete her undergraduate degree in Spanish Literature at New York University (NYU),where she also studied in Madrid for a semester. This opportunity allowed her to perform an original piece in Spanish for the public, demonstrating her versatility as an artist.
Poonam's academic pursuits continued at NYU, where she earned a Master's degree in Educational Children's Television from the Gallatin School of Individualized Study. This interdisciplinary program combined coursework from the Film school (Tisch School of the Arts) and the Education school (Steinhardt School of Education). Her thesis, "Using Neuroscience to Enhance the Efficacy of Children's Programming," involved the creation of a pilot episode for an original animated children's show.
Throughout her career, Poonam has received numerous nominations for her work, including five Best Actress nominations. In 2021, she was nominated for Best Screenplay for her film, Everfall. Her dedication to her craft is evident in her pursuit of creating work that inspires, uplifts, and fosters love.
