Following his military service, Cunha transitioned to the civilian film industry, initially creating industrial films and commercials.
He then ventured into television, penning, shooting, and directing early TV shows such as "The Adventures of Marshal O'Dell" and "Captain Bob Steele and the Border Patrol" for Toby Anguish Productions. Cunha's creative partnership with friend Arthur A. Jacobs led them to establish Screencraft Enterprises, a production company that specialized in low-budget, high-concept films.
The 1950s saw Cunha's directorial debut in the horror and science fiction genres, with the release of "Giant from the Unknown" (1958) and "She Demons" (1958),both of which showcased his expertise in crafting campy, cult-classic films. His subsequent projects, "Frankenstein's Daughter" (1958) and "Missile to the Moon" (1958),further solidified Cunha's reputation as a master of the schlock genre.
