Robert Downey Jr. was born on April 4, 1965, in Manhattan, New York, to writer, director, and filmographer Robert Downey Sr. and actress Elsie Downey (née Elsie Ann Ford). His parents' divorce in 1978 led him to move to California with his father.
Downey Jr. began his acting career at the age of five in the film Pound (1970),written and directed by his father. He went on to study at the Stagedoor Manor Performing Arts Training Center in upstate New York before dropping out of Santa Monica High School to pursue acting full-time in 1982.
He struggled with drug addiction for decades, which was exacerbated by his father's influence. Despite his struggles, Downey Jr. built a successful film career throughout the 1980s and 1990s, earning an Academy Award nomination and winning the BAFTA for Best Actor for his performance in Chaplin (1992).
