Sandi McCree is a talented actress, youth advocate, and educator known for her edgy, street-tough performance as "Delonda Brice" on HBO's The Wire. With over 21 years of experience in arts education and media literacy, she has been a pioneer in providing comprehensive arts education and art-focused prevention programming to children.
McCree's journey in the arts began at the age of 4, growing up in Washington, D.C. where she developed a love for storytelling. She went on to pursue a Bachelor of Arts degree in Radio, Film, and Television from the University of Maryland and a Master's in acting from Case Western Reserve University.
During her time at Case Western, McCree developed her approach to multimedia arts-focused prevention education through the formation of her organization, The Thought Provoking Arts Company (TPAC). TPAC was commissioned by Case Western Reserve University to develop original arts-based programs aimed at providing prevention awareness activities for the student body with an emphasis on freshmen residents.
McCree's professional career has taken two mutually beneficial tracks as an actress and arts educator. She has performed across the country in stage productions such as The Exonerated, Fires in the Mirror, and the one-woman show The Gimmick, while simultaneously writing and presenting on childhood education.
Her TV credits include The Closer, Cold Case, and Criminal Minds, yet it is her work on HBO's The Wire that embodies the marriage of her passion for acting/storytelling with youth advocacy. Against type, McCree portrays "Delonda Brice," a villainous, misguided mother who would rather see her son selling drugs on the streets in order to support her ghetto-fabulous lifestyle than attend and excel at school.
As a dedicated advocate for youth development, McCree has worked with multiple organizations, including the National Black Media Coalition, the Sickle Cell Disease Association of America, and the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz. She has also taught and directed students at the San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts and teaches theatre arts at the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts.
In addition to her work in education and the arts, McCree is a talented improviser and performs weekly with several improv troupes, including Most Humble. She has been a part of the prestigious Sunday Company at The Groundlings and has appeared in the award-winning documentary "Keep On Keepin On" produced by the legendary Quincy Jones.
