As a young man, he joined an esteemed orchestra as a pianist, where he crossed paths with the talented violinist, Sammy Cahn, a future collaborator and close friend.
In 1936, he became a member of the esteemed American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP),marking the beginning of a long and illustrious career.
His westward journey to Hollywood in 1941 would prove to be a pivotal moment, as he went on to collaborate with some of the most renowned musical talents of the time, including the illustrious songwriters, Sammy Cahn and Johnny Mercer.
Throughout his illustrious career, he penned an impressive array of popular songs, including the iconic "Rhythm Is Our Business," the theme song for the legendary Jimmy Lunceford orchestra, as well as "Shoe Shine Boy," "Rhythm In My Nursery Rhymes," "Please Be Kind," "If It's the Last Thing I Do," "Joseph, Joseph," "Posin'," "Dedicated to You," "Inspiration," "Tell Me Why," "You Wonderful You," and "Pipes of Pan," among many others.
