Shawn Howard, born on July 31, 1969, in Newark, New Jersey, was the youngest of three brothers. His parents, both lawyers, instilled in him a strong sense of discipline and responsibility. His father, Frank Howard Jr., was not only a lawyer but also a lieutenant with the Newark Police Department, setting an example of dedication and service.
Growing up in a close-knit family, Shawn attended an all-boys, Jesuit Catholic high school in Jersey City, where he developed a strong foundation in academic and extracurricular activities. He was accepted into a pre-law program at Fairleigh Dickinson University in New Jersey, with the intention of following in his parents' footsteps and joining their law firm. However, after just one year, Shawn transferred to New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Theater in 1992.
While still in school, Shawn gained valuable experience by appearing in an off-Broadway production of Mac Wellman's Obie award-winning play, 'Crowbar.' He also landed a series of character roles in episodic television and secured a leading role in his first film, 'Above The Rim,' opposite Tupac Shakur and Marlon Wayans. This early success paved the way for his future endeavors.
In 1994, Shawn made the bold decision to move to Hollywood, where he quickly found his footing in the entertainment industry. Within a mere 30 days, he landed his next leading role, opposite Terrence Howard in the film 'Sunset Park.' This breakthrough performance was followed by a regular role on the NBC series, 'The Single Guy,' and the HBO film, 'Boycott,' in which he starred alongside Jeffrey Wright and Terrence Howard.
Shawn's personal life is just as remarkable as his professional accomplishments. He is the proud father of Elijah Kovacevich Howard, born on August 1, 1996, a fellow Leo, who shares his passion for creativity and individuality.
