Thomas Szabo is a renowned director and writer, celebrated for his distinctive narrative style, which seamlessly blends classical cinematography, fast-paced action, and sharp humor. His movies are a masterful fusion of animation and live-action, showcasing his creative genius.
Szabo's academic background is impressive, having studied art in Paris and later pursuing a career as a film editor before making his directorial debut with the animated series "Space Goofs" (1997) for Gaumont Multimedia. The series won the special award for short format series at the Annecy Film Festival in 1998 and quickly gained international recognition, much like "Oggy and the Cockroaches" (1995),on which he also worked as a writer and storyboard artist.
Szabo's extensive portfolio includes supervising the creation of the video game "Stupid Invaders" (2001) by Ubisoft, collaborating on the storyboard of the animated science fiction film "Renaissance" (2006),and directing episodes for the series "Pat et Stanley" (2004) with Pierre Coffin at Mac Guff ligne. He also directed the 4D film "Journey to the Center of a Tree" for Terra Botanica Park Angers, which won the 1st prize for a 4D short film at the Dimension 3 festival, as well as the promotional film "Rabbids Go Home" (2009) for the video game.
In 2006, Szabo teamed up with Hélène Giraud to create the acclaimed animated TV series "Minuscule" for Futurikon. Produced in 2005, the series earned a Pulcinella Award for Best Series at the Cartoons on the Bay animation festival in 2006 and a special jury award at the Hiroshima Festival in 2008.
The duo adapted the "Minuscule" universe to the big screen, co-writing and co-directing "Minuscule: Valley of the Lost Ants" (2013),which was a commercial success in France and China, earning numerous awards, including the César for Best Animated Feature and a nomination for the Oscars and BAFTA Awards. Their second feature, "Minuscule 2: Mandibles from Far Away" (2018),premiered in France in January 2019 and was selected at the Colcoa festival in Los Angeles. The film became the biggest French success of 2019 in China.
Szabo was awarded the insignia of "Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters" in 2015. Born in 1966 in Paris, he graduated from ESAA DUPERRE (Duperre Art School) in 1987.
