Tony Fields took his stepfather's last name, Max Fields, after his parents divorced when he was just four years old. Born in Stafford, Kansas, he later relocated to Davis, California, where his gymnastics career first took off. However, his passion for dance soon led him to switch training when he secured scholarships to the prestigious Pacific Conservatory of the Performing Arts, where he studied drama and voice, as well as the Roland Dupree Academy of Dance.
Within just three months of starting at Dupree, Tony began touring with the renowned Debbie Reynolds in her nightclub act. By the time he joined Solid Gold, he had only had two years of formal dance training.
