A medical student, Courtney, is determined to uncover the secrets of the afterlife by conducting a groundbreaking experiment in an abandoned hospital room. She convinces her classmates Jamie and Sophia to join her in using defibrillation to pause her heart for a minute, hoping to record her brain activity during the experience. Despite Sophia's reservations, Jamie agrees to participate, and the experiment begins. However, when Courtney fails to revive after the sixty-second pause, her friends are left in a state of panic, struggling to bring her back to life with the help of fellow student Ray. Just as they manage to revive her, a rival student named Marlo appears, keen to learn more about the experiment and its implications.
