A tense conflict erupts in 1868 Oregon when the Army's construction of a road across a Native American reservation sparks resistance from the indigenous tribes and white settlers.

In 1868, several Native American tribes in Oregon Country's reservation, north of the Snake River, have adopted Christianity and new names. Doctor Holden's church has been built, and Sgt. Emmett Bell maintains order. However, tensions rise when Colonel Stedlow's cavalry arrives to construct a bridge and road across the reservation, sparking concerns among tribal chiefs that their treaty has been breached.
