In 1813 Portugal, a group of deserters, led by Sharpe's arch-nemesis Obadiah Hakeswill, hold two women captive, including the wife of a prominent English officer, demanding a ransom. Sharpe is tasked with rescuing the women, leading the 60th Rifles, a Rocket troop, and his majority in a perilous mission. However, he must also confront a formidable new foe, French Major Duclos.
