Red Ryder and Little Beaver arrive in a small Arizona town, where they're met with hostility by the townsfolk. Blackie Blake, the ranch foreman, is particularly aggressive, and tries to shoot Red from ambush. However, Red's horse, Thunder, intervenes and chases Blake away. The townspeople, believing Thunder to be a killer horse, demand that it be shot. Red insists that Thunder be given a trial, and then tells the story of how he acquired the horse.
