In a New England town, Frank Skeffington, a seasoned politician, runs his fifth and final campaign for Mayor, surrounded by his loyal team. While he's well-liked by the Irish immigrant community, he faces criticism from the town's elite and those who see him as corrupt. His son, Frank Jr., is apathetic about politics and focused on his own life. Meanwhile, Adam Caulfield, a sportswriter and Frank's nephew, supports his uncle, but his wife, Maeve, shares her father's negative views of Frank. As the campaign unfolds, Frank brings in Adam as a journalist to document the changing times in politics, including the increasing importance of electronic media.
