Woodlawn background

Woodlawn

A high-achieving high school football star navigates the complexities of racial prejudice, self-discovery, and his commitment to both his faith and his athletic aspirations.

In 1973, Woodlawn High School in Birmingham, Alabama is desegregated, and Tony Nathan, a talented Black football player, joins the team along with other Black players. Despite Coach Gerelds' efforts to unite the team, tensions between Black and white players run high. After a school riot, the team is visited by chaplain Hank Erwin, who delivers a powerful speech that inspires nearly the entire team to convert to Christianity and come together in prayer.
